Millions of readers remember The Goal, the landmark business novel that sets forth by way of story the essential principles of Eliyahu Goldratt’s innovative methods of production. Now, from the AGI-Goldratt Institute and Jeff Cox, the same creative writer who co-authored The Goal, comes VELOCITY, the book that reveals how to achieve outstanding bottom-line results by integrating the world’s three most powerful continuous improvement disciplines: Lean, Six Sigma, and Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints.Used by the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps to dramatically improve some of the most complex, logistically vast supply chains in the world, the VELOCITY APPROACH draws on the strengths of all three disciplines to deliver breakthrough performance gains. This review is from: Velocity: Combining Lean, Six Sigma and the Theory of Constraints to Achieve Breakthrough Performance – A Business Novel (Hardcover)

This is a great business story — great because it is based on events and characters that I encounter over and over again in worldwide consulting; great because it teaches and entertains at the same time; and great because it shows how every organization can do a better job of aligning it’s parts to achieve a goal. For me, Velocity is one of the most important business books of the decade. It touches on a delicate subject – the methodology silos and bigotry that exist in organizations today. With compassion and fun, the story proceeds to bust the silos and make sense of how to integrate improvement efforts using sufficient tools to accomplish a major change.

I’ve worked with many excellent CEOs. I’ve seen them embrace one book, one methodology, one philosophy. I’ve seen them achieve great results. But after a few years, the momentum slows down or dies. Often, new people enter the organization and set a different direction, sometimes removing the benefits of past efforts. Velocity shows how to understand and integrate the three necessary components of any improvement effort, without destroying or downplaying any one of them. The co-authors really know what they are talking about – it’s obvious that they have not only experienced the problems, but have implemented highly successful, integrated solutions. As a consultant and author with over 40 years of worldwide business experience, I highly recommend reading this book.
