Make sure your resume features the bullit points of what you did the last 7 years. I assume you are a self taught accountant. Actually the best accountants play in church rock bands for some reason.

Anyone who talks Six Sigma is good at math, which is why you made twice as much as my brother in law.

Sign up for your MBA in project management. I like Keller because they start classes every 6 weeks. Then you can list on your resume that you are working on your MBA. That may get you pass the HR department. The best class I thought was organizational behaviour. Half the students changed their jobs. Network with all your Harvard friends.

PS Keller has a campus in Portland, and they don’t require you to take the GMAT. You can walk in the door and start a week latter. University of Oregon is probably cheaper, you should be able to transfer one or two classes from Keller.

I just finished my full-time MBA, and I would say it depends. If you can land another job you’re happy with, I think it’s clear that you do NOT need an MBA as it wouldn’t necessarily have a high return on investment for you given the tuition expense and foregone earnings.

However, in this economy, you may have considerable difficulty finding another job making that much without an advanced degree (I know it’s not fair… blame shortsighted, uncreative, and risk-averse corporate recruiters). An MBA, especially a full-time MBA, is not just about business knowledge or management skills; it’s also about learning how to successfully recruit for a job in today’s corporate landscape. Unfortunately, I don’t think there are any MBA programs in the state of Oregon that will ensure you a salary as high as you were getting. You may end up having to head south to the Bay area or LA for a program that will get your career back on track.

If I were you, I’d pursue both options right now. Look for work AND start studying for the GMAT in preparation to apply to MBA programs this fall. If you haven’t found a new job you’re happy with by fall, bite the bullet and head back to school.

    Response to Additional Details:
Don’t even try to figure out how the money situation will work until AFTER you’ve applied to several MBA programs because you never know what kind of financial resources will become available to you. I went to school with a 2-year-old, and I was shocked to have been offered a full scholarship to a top MBA program (plus, they gave me a $ 4,500/yr childcare stipend). There’s no use trying to budget for an MBA preemptively; just apply and see where the chips fall.
