Learning Leadership Skills with Six Sigma

Six Sigma professionals always work in teams. These teams are led by Black Belts, who are assisted by the Green Belts, while the Yellow Belts round out the group by acting as support staff for their more highly-skilled counterparts.

The Black Belt will lead the team, choose the members, delegate tasks, and design plans. Green Belts will often have the opportunity to run a project if they have proven themselves to the executives and Black Belts they have worked for through experience and skill. Yellow Belt team members do not lead any projects, and are there to collect and analyze data so that the higher level professionals can take care of their own tasks.

It is very important to have strong leadership skills when you have the education and certification to be a Black Belt professional. You will need to know how to listen, how to speak, and how to be as organized as possible. A Black Belt professional must listen to the team members and take their suggestions seriously. He or she will already have knowledge about the specific qualifications of each member of their team. In fact, a team is often chosen based upon the distinct and different skill sets each member is able to bring to a Six Sigma Project. By understanding the individual skills and talents of the team members, the Black Belt professional will have an easier time delegating tasks to the right person.

Black Belts are also experts at making their instructions clear. Their team members are not confused about what needs to be done, when it needs to be done by, and how to do it. Each one is chosen for his or her credentials, intelligence, experience, and education. The 6 Sigma professional should always be confident in his or her team members.

As the team leader, the Black Belt will also need to be able to make changes and readily deal with any conflicts within the team. The goal is to improve the quality of the products or services offered by a specific company or organization. It is vital that the Six Sigma Project leader choose the right people to work on each task. They should be able to handle any questions that come their way, either from the company executives or from their own team members.  This skill is known as delegation.

Sometimes, a Six Sigma project will be run by Green Belt, if that professional has specific knowledge within the industry, the specific company or has experience in leading these types of projects. These Green Belt professionals also show a great deal of quality leadership skills that assist them in making the right decisions and producing success with their work. Being able to lead a Six Sigma project is a great skill that many business people are very proud to have in their repertoire.
