Strategic Quality Management,
I recently used Dr. Sower’s Essentials of Quality book to teach a senior level course on quality management and found it to be exceptional. From his conceptualization of quality management at the strategic level to his discussion of the statistics underpinning control charting, the text is clear and concise and immediately understandable. The text has appropriate depth and breadth help beginners grasp the basic principles of quality management and experts understand how to strategically embrace quality management at all levels within their organizations. Dr. Sower’s experiential approach to learning sets his book apart from other quality texts. Not only does he provide material necessary to increase knowledge levels but also experiential exercises to ensure that appropriate quality-related skills are also developed. In addition to being an excellent text for university courses, I believe that the text is well suited for use in corporate training situations as well. Dr. Sower has extensive experience in both academia and industry. This experience is evident throughout. It is seldom that one text is well suited for both academic and corporate uses. My experience with the book leads me to believe that Dr. Sower’s Essentials of Quality will well serves needs of educators and practicing managers.
