I want a career change to IT project management. I have my MBA and 10 years of supply chain experience.?
I just need some insight of what I should do from here. I took six sigma training no project completed yet and I haven’t done the PMMI. For IT project management should I get a minimum of a technical degree in programming or networking or would certification in these areas be fine? Please help.
The six sigma management course could be your best bet. In the IT field, many companies look more for experience than the diploma but it’s still good to have them. Best of luck!
Obviously you are already educated. The more certifications you have, the more potential value you offer the prospective compnay. The degree route would be thought to have the best benefit, and yet companys today are wanting to "cheap out".
Your question is a tough call. In IT, if I were looking to go for a specific field with high pay I would go with both networking and programming, specializing in Linux/Unix. I have been IT manager over the five state regions of two corporations. Now am semi retired (ran/sold my own ISP business) and am very content as manger of a PC store where I handle customer relations, networking for clients and security. I have many certifications and no degree. But things have changed greatly.
Currently the best opportunities I see are for Linux programmers or database programmers. The Linux admin/programmer positions usually start around 70-80K/yr. And I do see many of these though competition is stiff.
Your MBA and management experience should be sufficient if you acquire the skills for networking. But again times have changed. When I managed our 5 state regions, I was stronger in networking and admin skills than in management. But there were times when I had to bring in a consultant for guru level issues. Companies today are less willing to do that and if they pay you the 70-80K, they want you to do it all!
Makes for a very stiff drink! don’t know if any of this has helped but hope so and wish you the best of luck!
