Understanding Six Sigma Training in Business
Even when you are knowledgeable about a job and how to perform it, it is always helpful to get some extra training. Some employers would rather have employees that have already been trained in a process, rather than having to train them. It is not different when learning the Six Sigma methods. This training is done online for the most part.
People who want to learn the Six Sigma methods can train at the Yellow, Green or Black levels. Generally, most people will start at the bottom level, which is yellow and go up from there. They will only progress to the highest levels if the individual is interested in being a leader and running projects. The Black Belt professionals are the most knowledgeable and the most trained in the methods. They will run the teams, choose team members, delegate tasks, develop the project and monitor its progress.
When someone has worked at the Yellow or Green Belt levels, they would have an easier time moving into and training for the Black Belt level. However, they must be willing to run the projects and act as the leader in order to be successful at this level. To certify, they will need to have a good deal of knowledge and understanding about Six Sigma, all of the tools that are used, and how and when to apply them. They will need to train in leadership and be experienced at seeing projects through and producing successful results.
The Green Belt level is also one that requires some leadership skills. They work between the Yellow and Black levels, overseeing the project, performing tasks directed to them by the Black Belt professional in charge and suggesting solutions to problems that are discovered. If they have special knowledge or skills with the company or the particular industry they are working in, they can lead a project on their own, with a Black Belt professional looking on. To certify for this level, the individual must have an extensive knowledge of the Six Sigma methods and tools. They must have a keen understanding of how to apply those tools in order to out problems within the company. They must also have the ability to work within the team and as a supervisor on other occasions.
The Yellow Belt is the support level. At this level, a Six Sigma professional would need to understand the methods and tools, and know when and how to apply them within a project. They will be directed as to their jobs by the Green and Black Belt professionals. They do need to understand how the methods work, but do not need to have any extensive leadership skills. They are there to perform the tasks of collecting information, analyzing it, and suggesting solutions. To certify, they should study the tools and methods extensively.
